Family law encompasses everything from adoption to juvenile delinquency to
child dependency and termination of parental rights to divorce.
Jefferson County is large enough that there are separate courts and judges
to deal with "family law". There is a Domestic Relations Court building,
which handles divorces, and a Family Court which handles family law issues
not involving a divorce. Adoptions are handled through the probate court.
In other counties, the same judges may handle civil, criminal, and juvenile
dockets. Every county has a separate probate judge.
